Professor Soo Downe OBE is one of the most influential voices in midwifery research worldwide. Her work has shaped World Health Organization guidance on intrapartum care, arguing that safety and psychosocial wellbeing must be valued equally and that maternity services should go beyond survival alone.

We are honoured to welcome her to our 50th Anniversary Conference on 20 June at UCL London, where she speaks on Why Midwifery Matters — Making what counts, count.

There have been three major maternity investigations in fifteen years to find out what kept going wrong at Morecambe Bay, Shrewsbury and Telford, and East Kent. Now, a new NHS Race and Health Observatory briefing asks whether they answered them holistically.

Black women face around three times the risk of maternal death; Asian women nearly double. Yet across all three investigations, ethnicity was minimised and the intersection with deprivation never examined.

If our investigations cannot see the women most likely to be harmed, the lessons keep missing the same people.
