We call it cord blood. But it isn't the cord's blood. It's the baby's.

At the moment of birth, up to a third of a baby's blood is still circulating through the placenta and umbilical cord, carrying oxygen, iron, and stem cells. When the cord is clamped immediately, or just not given enough time, that blood never reaches the baby. It stays behind, or gets donated to a cord bank by parents who were told it was a waste product.

It was never a waste product. It was always the baby's.

@drsarawickham Dr Sara Wickham puts it simply: "Why is it that, when a newborn baby needs some help, the first thing we do is to cut off their existing oxygen supply? I truly cannot think of any other medical emergency situation in which the permanent severing of the one route by which a compromised person was successfully receiving oxygen would be seen as the right thing to do."

@amanda.burleigh has spent 20 years asking one question: whose blood is it anyway? She challenged this practice inside the NHS. She was bullied for it. She eventually left clinical midwifery because of it. She kept going anyway, campaigning, publishing, co-developing a bedside resuscitation trolley so that even babies who need help at birth don't have to lose their blood to get it.

Someone asked what midwives and mothers did with perineal tears in the past. Members who trained in the 1960s, 1980s, and beyond shared what they remembered. The thread ended with an invitation to write a clinical guide for the 50th anniversary edition of Midwifery Matters.

A midwife writing an article on out-of-guidance care asked for oversight and direction. Another member had just written her hospital's OOG policy and offered to share it.

A third-year student posted anonymously, questioning whether she had the confidence to continue. Within hours, seven members had responded with offers of support. She came back to say her review meeting had gone well.

This is what the group looks like, most weeks. Midwives supporting midwives.
